Book Summary: Good To Great

Disney Cruise

Explore what goes into a company’s transformation from

mediocre to excellent. Based on hard evidence and volumes of

data, the book author (Jim Collins) and his team uncover

timeless principles on how the good-to-great companies like

Abbott, Circuit City, Fannie Mae, Gillette, Kimberly-Clark,

Kroger, Nucor, Philip Morris, Pitney Bowes, Walgreens, and

Wells Fargo produced sustained great results and achieved

enduring greatness, evolving into companies that were indeed

‘Built to Last’.

The Collins team selected 2 sets of comparison companies:

a. Direct comparisons – Companies in the same industry with the same resources and opportunities as the good-to-great group but showed no leap in performance, which were: Upjohn, Silo, Great Western, Warner-Lambert, Scott Paper, A&P, Bethlehem Steel, RJ Reynolds, Addressograph, Eckerd, and Bank of America.

b. Unsustained comparisons – Companies that made a short-term shift from good to great but failed to maintain the trajectory, namely: Burroughs, Chrysler, Harris, Hasbro, Rubbermaid, and Teledyne

Wisdom In A Nutshell:

a. Ten out of eleven good-to-great company leaders or CEOs came from the inside. They were not outsiders hired in to ‘save’ the company. They were either people who worked many years at the company or were members of the family that owned the company.

b. Strategy per se did not separate the good to great companies from the comparison groups.

c. Good-to-great companies focus on what Not to do and what they should stop doing.

d. Technology has nothing to do with the transformation from good to great. It may help accelerate it but is not the cause of it.

e. Mergers and acquisitions do not cause a transformation from good to great.

f. Good-to-great companies paid little attention to managing change or motivating people. Under the right conditions, these problems naturally go away.

g. Good-to-great transformations did not need any new name, tagline, or launch program. The leap was in the performance results, not a revolutionary process.

h. Greatness is not a function of circumstance; it is clearly a matter of conscious choice.

i. Every good-to-great company had “Level 5″ leadership during pivotal transition years, where Level 1 is a Highly Capable Individual, Level 2 is a Contributing Team Member, Level 3 is the Competent Manager, Level 4 is an Effective Leader, and Level 5 is the Executive who builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will.

j. Level 5 leaders display a compelling modesty, are self-effacing and understated. In contrast, two thirds of the comparison companies had leaders with gargantuan personal egos that contributed to the demise or continued mediocrity of the company.

k. Level 5 leaders are fanatically driven, infected with an incurable need to produce sustained results. They are resolved to do whatever it takes to make the company great, no matter how big or hard the decisions.

l. One of the most damaging trends in recent history is the tendency (especially of boards of directors) to select dazzling, celebrity leaders and to de-select potential Level 5 leaders.

m. Potential Level 5 leaders exist all around us, we just have to know what to look for.

n. The research team was not looking for Level 5 leadership, but the data was overwhelming and convincing. The Level 5 discovery is an empirical, not ideological, finding.

o. Before answering the “what” questions of vision and strategy, ask first “who” are the right people for the team.

p. Comparison companies used layoffs much more than the good-to-great companies. Although rigorous, the good-to-great companies were never ruthless and did not rely on layoffs or restructuring to improve performance.

q. Good-to-great management teams consist of people who debate vigorously in search of the best answers, yet who unify behind decisions, regardless of parochial interests.

r. There is no link between executive compensation and the shift from good to great. The purpose of compensation is not to ‘motivate’ the right behaviors from the wrong people, but to get and keep the right people in the first place.

s. The old adage “People are your most important asset” is wrong. People are not your most important asset. The right people are.

t. Whether someone is the right person has more to do with character and innate capabilities than specific knowledge, skills or experience.

u. The Hedgehog Concept is a concept that flows from the deep understanding about the intersection of the following three circles:

1.What you can be best in the world at, realistically, and what you cannot be best in the world at

2.What drives your economic engine

3.What you are deeply passionate about

v. Discover your core values and purpose beyond simply making money and combine this with the dynamic of preserve the core values – stimulate progress, as shown for example by Disney. They have evolved from making short animated films, to feature length films, to theme parks, to cruises, but their core values of providing happiness to young and old, and not succumbing to cynicism remains strong.

w. Enduring great companies don’t exist merely to deliver returns to shareholders. In a truly great company, profits and cash flow are absolutely essential for life, but they are not the very point of life.

“IF YOU’RE DOING SOMETHING YOU CARE DEEPLY ABOUT AND IF YOU BELIEVE IN IT, IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO IMAGINE NOT TRYING TO MAKE IT GREAT.”

Sample Hotel Reservation Letter – What to Include and Why

Disney Cruise

Just follow the steps in this sample hotel reservation letter structure and you should have no unexpected troubles.

Before you begin:

Hotel reservation letters can vary in style, But just make sure you give the reservation staff all the information they need to make sure there are no misunderstandings or disappointments on arrival.

Every specific piece of information should be in a separate paragraph. This makes for easier reading.

Keep it short and sweet (it’s not an essay), and don’t forget the following information:

1. Opening (example):

Dear Sir/Madam

My name is (your name) and I would like to book a (type of room) in your hotel for (number) nights.

2. Dates and times: (important)

I/We will be arriving on (date, including the day of the week) at approximately (time). Departure will be on (date, including the day of the week) at (time).

Notes: -State the date and approximate time of arrival and departure because it helps the staff know which guests will be arriving first to prepare the way for them, so waiting time for your room is kept to a minimum.

-It’s always a good idea to also include how many nights you will be staying in brackets. This is a good way for the reservation staff to double check the length of your stay as hotels count nights and not days when preparing your invoice.

-Remember, even if you arrive there at 2 o’clock in the morning, that night counts and you are seldom entitled to remain in your room after 12 o’clock noon on your departure date.

3. Number of people: (important)

How many adults? How many children? (always include children’s ages).

4. Room type(s) and preferred location(s):

Single, double, suite, ground floor, top floor, overlooking the sea, etc.

5. Board preferences: (important)

Self catering/bed & breakfast/half board/full board/all-inclusive

Note: make sure the hotel you are considering has the services you desire as not all hotels offer things like all-inclusive, and what you get for each type of service may vary from one hotel or country to another depending on their policies (find out before making your reservation to avoid disappointments).

6. Special needs/desires: (optional)

Some people may have health conditions which may require special attention (migraine sufferers would probably want a quiet room far away from any entertainment facilities, for example). Business men/women may need an internet connection in their rooms, while others may just have special preferences (overlooking the sea, rooms on upper floors, etc). These should be specified in your letter.

Note: Obviously the needs of those with medical conditions will be given more importance than other preferences if the hotel is fully booked, so don’t be surprised if you cannot get what you wanted unless you have the option and have paid for it specifically.

7. Facilities: (depending on the hotel)

If there are special facilities (sauna, jacuzzi, etc.) which need to be reserved before using them, you may wish to do so in advance to avoid waiting.

8. Contact information: (important)

Especially your phone number, cell phone and/or fax number.

*The main thing to remember is to include all the important information above and keep the hotel reservation letter short. The hotel staff prefer it that way and it helps to avoid confusion. You can even use bullet text to display the information.

Best Places to Go for Winter Sun

Disney Cruise

There are many fun not-too-far-off places to go during the winter to get away from the freezing weather. My favorites are California, Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. (Actually I live in California, so I don’t have to go there on vacation!)

California is my favorite state. I have lived there for about half my life and I never get tired of it. Both northern and southern California are quite exciting in very different ways. When people think of California, they usually think of southern California – the beaches, Hollywood, and Disneyland. These are all very fun places to visit. The three main big cities in southern California are Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara.

Northern California is another world. San Francisco is a beautiful, large old city surrounded by water on three sides, the San Francisco Bay to the east, the Golden Gate to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The Bay Area, the metropolitan area of San Francisco, is comprised of the nine counties along the San Francisco Bay and is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. It includes San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Rafael, Santa Rosa, and San Jose.

Hawaii is the southernmost state. It consists of eight islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Hawaii. Hawaii is the biggest island geographically and home to the volcano Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the islands. All the islands were formed from volcanoes. Honolulu, the capitol and largest city in Hawaii, is on the island of Oahu. Hawaii also has many beautiful beaches.

Florida is another gorgeous state with lots of sun and nice beaches. Fun places to go in Florida include Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Daytona, and the Florida Keys, Key West in particular. Orlando has many theme parks, including Walt Disney World and Sea World.

From Florida it’s easy to get to the Caribbean by boat. A cruise is the best way to tour the Caribbean Islands, which include the Bahamas, St. Martin, St. Lucia, Martinique, and Puerto Rico. The Islands are beautiful but very poor. However, the natives are quite friendly.

Mexico is another spectacular place to travel during the winter. Besides Tijuana, which is a dump, the only places I’ve visited in Mexico are Cancun and the Yukitan Peninsula, which are quite beautiful. Cancun is one of many resort towns in Mexico, built primarily for tourists, some others being Acapulco, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vaerte. To see the real Mexico, you need to take day trips from these cities. The Chichen Itsa is a fabulous Mayan pyramid in the Yukitan peninsula, an easy day trip from Cancun.

Top 10 Winter Getaways

Disney Cruise

Summer is typically the season that everyone thinks of when planning their vacations. But why not dare to be different and take a winter vacation getaway instead? If you are a skier, snowboarder, or just someone who enjoys the winter months, a winter vacation may be just what you have been looking for. There are plenty of spots around the world that make spectacular winter getaways.

Hershey. If you are traveling before or during the Christmas season, consider Hershey, Pennsylvania as your vacation destination. The home of Hershey’s candy, Hershey Park becomes home to Christmas Candyland, where over one million Christmas lights are put on display. Christmas Candyland typically runs for a month prior to Christmas.

Sweden. Located in the small riverside village of Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, Sweden’s Ice Hotel is famous worldwide for great winter vacations. The hotel is created each winter out of 10,000 tons of ice from the nearby river and 30,000 tons of snow. The hotel features the famous Absolut Ice Bar, a winter favorite for the 21+ crowd.

Yellowstone. During the winter the Yellowstone National Park, a popular summer destination in the United States, offers Lodging and Learning programs where guests of all ages can stay at Yellowstone and participate in educational lessons during the winter. These programs offer a great way for visitors of all ages to learn about the beautiful and fascinating Yellowstone Park.

Wisconsin Dells. This small Wisconsin town offers a great winter vacation at the Great Wolf Lodge, home of huge indoor water parks. Great Wolf Lodge is a popular destination for families. Visitors of Wisconsin Dells get the best of both worlds with summertime perpetually recreated indoors and snow falling outdoors. Wisconsin Dells is located near both Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin.

New England. One of the most historical areas in the United States, New England is where the country was founded. In addition to the number of historical sites throughout the six states that make up the region (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont), you will also find plenty to do in the winter months. Maine offers one of the nicest ski resorts in the country in Sugarloaf USA, or you can try the beautiful White Mountain area of New Hampshire where you will find a plethora of ski resorts and the historical Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States.

Orlando. If skiing is not really your thing and you are looking to get away from the snow for a few weeks then travel to Florida, one of the most frequented states in the US by vacationers each year. Walt Disney World offers discounted rates during specific periods of the winter months, considered the theme park’s off-season. Not only will the parks and restaurants be less crowded than during summer or a school vacation week, but you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather during your stay.

Caribbean. Why not take a cruise during the winter months? Like Florida, a Caribbean cruise offers a change of pace from the snowy, cold winter months that you may be used to. Winter is typically a perfect time for a cruise because the weather in the Caribbean has calmed down. Summer is hurricane season, spelling trouble for cruises but winter is perfect for calm seas and a relaxing cruise.

Mont Tremblant. Located in the spectacular Laurentian Mountains of the Canadian province of Quebec, Mont Tremblant offers its visitors over 600 acres of land for skiing and snowboarding. Perhaps the best choice if you are looking to take to the slopes, keep in mind that the US dollar is worth more in Canada and can go further than it would on a vacation in the United States.

Alaska. If you are traveling with children, Alaska may be the perfect vacation choice for you. Offering everything from dog sledding, one of Alaska’s most popular sports, to viewing the Northern lights, Alaska is one of the best winter vacation destinations. Although it is notorious for its cold, wintry weather, Alaska also holds a number of entertainment options that are likely to keep the whole family busy.

Lake Tahoe. For decades Lake Tahoe has been one of the top winter vacation destinations in the world. Located on the border of Nevada and California just west of Carson City, Nevada, you will find that Lake Tahoe has plenty of activities for everyone in the family. Lake Tahoe averages 360 inches of snow each year, making for a winter wonderland of fun on your winter vacation. There are a number of high quality resorts around picturesque Lake Tahoe and the Rocky Mountains make a fabulous backdrop for the perfect getaway.

Wyndham Points Timeshares – Are They Scam Or Not?

Disney Cruise

Do you think all timeshare deals are scams? Have you been told to stay away from them? How many times have you been told just to say ‘no’ to that long boring timeshare pitch you hear to get your free tickets to Disney World?

Well, like anything, timeshares could be bad or good for you, depending on the deal you get, timeshares quality and also how you use it. Most of the time if you buy a timeshare which is forced upon you after a 3 hour presentation from a pushing timeshare company, you’re not getting a good deal. And yes, they will make you believe that buying vacation ownership is going to be one of your most valuable and important lifetime decisions…and yes, you could end up paying your second mortgage for your “dream vacation ownership” your whole life, if you did not get a good deal on your timeshare. Having said all that, let me tell you, timeshares are great! You can use them for your vacations, you can use them to make some extra money, and if you’re tired of dealing with them, you can resell them! Of course, it’s hard to resell your timeshare if you purchased it for $25,000 and trying to resell for $15,000, for example.

Wyndham (formerly known as Fairfield) timeshares are very popular among timeshare owners and timeshare exchange companies. They make your life very easy when you want to choose your vacation destination among Wyndham Vacation Resorts. The company makes it possible with their easy reward points program. You earn points every time you enjoy your vacation at a Wyndam resort. Think about people you know, your family, your friends… You could be sending off someone you know to a Wyndham vacation resort you really liked last time, also giving them an opportunity to have their dream vacation at a reasonable price while you’re earning your Wynham reward points. Their points are exchangeable with another popular vacation ownership exchange point system – RCI. The reason I like Wyndham points time shares is for their structure, customer service, reward points, more than 6,000 worldwide locations around the globe, including Wingate by Wyndham, Ramada, Days Inn and Baymont Inn & Suites, available from Wyndham and Wyndham Worldmark. Their reward points can be used toward thousand of redemption options such as free nights, gift cards, car rentals and even airline tickets. Wyndham resorts have activities for the whole family. They even have babysitting service for the children so that you can enjoy going out late with your spouse, inside or even outside of the resort.

Of course, like any other timeshare, depending where you get your Wyndham timeshare, you could get a good deal or not. You can often find great deals on Wyndham timeshares for sale on the internet. Make sure you carefully read all the details about these deals. You don’t want to buy a cheap deed for a Wyndam timeshare only to find out later there is a huge maintenance fee that you have to pay every year. Read all the details for the deals you find, no matter where you find them, and if you see something you like, go for it as it will not sit there forever!

Meet the New Disney Ship

Disney Cruise

Have you heard about the new Disney cruise ship? Yes the news is true and the ship made its initial voyage January 26, 2011 in port Canaveral, Florida. If you have experienced cruising the old ships of Disney, this ship will excite you as it is truly a new extravaganza. With the ship coming out with a fresh design and image, you can’t help but be intrigued.

Meet the “Disney Dream”! The first new Disney Ship in a decade, the Dream takes its cruisers to a new level of entertainment.

The most innovative new attraction of the ship is… the “Aquaduck.” It is the “water coaster” that only Disney could have conceived of. Water slides are not unusual on cruise ships, but this one offers a few new twists. This ride utilizes the same Master Blaster technology employed at Disney theme parks to catapult riders forward and upward as they shoot through a series of turns, twists, and drops while riding an inflatable raft through the Aquaduck’s clear tube.

This ride measures 765 feet long, and winds around a significant portion of the top deck. It rises four stories off the top deck, and the excitement is intense enough that Disney has instituted height limit for riders. Of course, like most attractions on Disney‘s ships, this one is included with the cost of sailing.

While perhaps not as innovative, not to be overlooked are the interesting themed restaurants aboard the Dream. The three “rotational dining” eateries offer a themed dining experience.

The Enchanted Garden is based on the gardens of Versailles and offers “continental market cuisine.” The Royal Palace serves princess treatment along with French cuisine. And the Animator’s Palate is a carryover from the Magic and Wonder vessels, dishing up Pacific Rim fare.

4 Day Caribbean Cruises – 6 Things You Must Always Remember

Disney Cruise

4 Day Caribbean cruises are a great way to spend your vacation. Before deciding when you are going there a couple of things you must consider. There are several types of cruises: the romantic ones, family cruises, single cruises, senior cruises, and more. You must be really sure on what type of cruising you are getting on; otherwise your vacation might have an unexpected turn. Depending on the cruise package the duration of the cruise also varies. Some cruises that go around the world have duration of 130 days. The most popular cruises however are of a shorter duration like 4 and 7 days.

Even on the shorter cruises there are certain things you cannot overlook:

1. Book your cruise with anticipation. Generally the earlier you do it, the more money you will able to save. Try to go between March and April, is usually cheaper around this months.

2. The 4 Day Caribbean cruises usually visit 2 to 3 different islands. So be sure these islands are places you really want to visit.

3. Bring all the documentation needed to the cruise. That includes passports, cruise tickets and any health insurance papers you might need just in case.

4. One detail that many people forget is to have a carry-on bag with you with all the toiletries needed like toothbrush, medicines, hair brush and a change of clothes for the first night in case the luggage takes too long to arrive. On the last night of the cruise you will have to do like in the first day; put all the toiletries and a change of clothes in the carry-on bag because you will have to pack all your things on the luggage and leave it outside the room so in the morning you will have only with you the things on your carry-on.

5. Since this is a short cruise, one formal suit should enough for the formal night. Longer cruises usually have 2 formal nights or more but this is not the case. A couple of swimsuits should be fine for those moments when you want to jump in the pool. A couple of shirts and pants with some underwear is all that you will require in that time, no need to go overboard with clothes especially since you will need the extra space for the souvenirs.

6. Identify all your belongings inside your luggage and the luggage itself with some ribbon that way you will have an easier time finding it. Also bring a lock to secure your luggage as well.

Remember that good planning makes the difference in a vacation.
